अविद्या के होने से संस्कार होते हैं। संस्कारों के होने से विज्ञान होता है। विज्ञ।न के होने से नामरूप होते हैं । नामरूप के होने से षडायतन होता है। षडायतन के होने से स्पर्श होता है। स्पर्श के होने से वेदाना होती हैं। वेदाना के होने से तृष्णा होती है। तृष्णा के होने से उपादान होता है । उपादान के होने से भव होता है । भव के होने से जाति होती है । जाति के होने से जरा, मरण, शोक, रोना-पीटना, दुःख, बेचैनी और परेशानी होती है । इस सरह, सारे दुःख-समुह का समुदय होता है । भिक्षुओं ! इसी को प्रतीत्यसमुत्पाद कहते हैं।
When this exists, that comes to be. With the arising (uppada) of this, that arises. When this does not exist, that does not come to be. With the cessation (nirodha) of this, that ceases.
